Town of Lamèque
The town of Lamèque is located at the north-eastern tip of the Acadian Peninsula, in the centre of the Lamèque Island and has a population of 1423 (source: 2006 Census).
Fishing and peat moss are the most important industries here. Tourism also plays a major role, especially with the Acadian Peninsula Ecological Park, festivals and many great beaches on Lamèque and Miscou Islands. The town has its own waterworks system, fire department and volunteer firefighters, RCMP office, parks and leisure commission, playgrounds for kids, minor baseball field, senior baseball field with lights, 1500-seat arena, winter activity centre with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails, tennis courts and a camping site located in nearby Petite-Lamèque.
Two senior citizens homes can be found in Lamèque, as well as a hospital and community health centre, school, library, pharmacy and many other businesses.
The town hall also hosts a community hall with a stage and a music room; offices of the Lamèque International Baroque Music Festival and the Peat moss festival are also located there.
The co-operative movement is on very solid grounds in Lamèque and has been for over 60 years; consumer (Société Coopérative de Lamèque), fish (Association coopérative des pêcheurs de l’Île), credit union (Caisse Populaire des Îles), housing (Habitat des Pionniers) and renewable energy/windfarm (Coopérative d’énergie renouvelable). The cooperative movement helped residents control their own destiny and boost their local economy.
From a tourist perspective, both islands are filled with fishing and hunting sites and many magnificent beaches.
We can finally say that the Lamèque area is a great place to live and raise your family!
