Recreation and Parks Commission

Service des Loisirs Lamèque

Sports and leisure activities were and still are a way of life for Lamèque.

In 1987, the Town of Lamèque initiated an in-depth study of its citizens’ needs in terms of recreation, sports and related activities. That same year, the main recommendation of this study became a reality in the fall as the Town hired a recreation and parks coordinator.

The implementation of a recreation and parks commission being related to this new job, town council adopted in 1989 a by-law establishing the Commission des Loisirs (Recreation and Parks Commission). The first official meeting of the members of the Commission was held in March 1990.

The Commission is the link between local residents and the town council. As well as being a consultant for all the community organizations, the recreation and parks coordinator leads the way in providing quality services, hosting activities and special events and promoting healthy lifestyles. Through the years, the Lamèque Recreation and Parks Service developed many popular programs and services well liked by citizens of the community. Lamèque has great sporting facilities; playgrounds near the school, arena, baseball and softball parks, soccer fields and tennis courts. A winter activity centre with cross-country ski trails, slide, skating rink, snowshoe trails and equipment renting facilities is becoming more popular every year.

The Camp Poitou Richelieu, a day camp for kids 6 to 12, is held every summer for over 20 years. Lamèque is well known for its sense of mutual aide and its volunteers. A volunteer appreciation night is also a fixture in Lamèque for over 20 years. The Commission also hosts a fund-raising lottery for community organizations working with kids..

The Ecological Park of the Acadian Peninsula, an important tourist and nature attraction, was a project of the Commission too. Also, a large community sign located at the main intersection of the town and where volunteer groups can publicize their activities is another achievement of the Commission.
